SGPT / ALT

Overview

The SGPT / ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase), Serum test measures the level of Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), also known as Serum Glutamate Pyruvate Transaminase (SGPT), in the blood. ALT is an enzyme found mainly in the liver. When liver cells are damaged or inflamed, ALT is released into the bloodstream, causing its levels to rise. This test is one of the most important markers of liver health and is commonly used to detect and monitor conditions such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease, liver injury, cirrhosis, and medication-related liver damage. It is often performed as part of a Liver Function Test (LFT)

How to Prepare

• 1No fasting is generally required. Avoid alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours before the test
