The Creatine Phosphokinase MB (CPK-MB), Serum test measures the level of the CK-MB (Creatine Kinase-MB) enzyme, which is found primarily in the heart muscle. When the heart muscle is damaged, such as during a heart attack (myocardial infarction), CK-MB is released into the bloodstream, causing its levels to rise. Although high-sensitivity Troponin is now the preferred marker for diagnosing heart attacks, the CPK-MB test remains useful in specific clinical situations, including assessing heart muscle injury, detecting reinfarction (a second heart attack), and monitoring recovery after cardiac events.
