Overview

The Uric Acid, Serum test measures the concentration of uric acid in your blood. Uric acid is a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines, substances naturally found in the body and in certain foods. Normally, uric acid is filtered by the kidneys and eliminated through urine. When the body produces too much uric acid or the kidneys are unable to remove it efficiently, uric acid levels can rise, increasing the risk of gout, kidney stones, and chronic kidney disease. This test is commonly recommended for individuals with joint pain, swelling, kidney disorders, recurrent kidney stones, or those undergoing treatment for gout.
