Overview

The Anti-Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody (Anti-TPO), Serum test detects antibodies directed against thyroid peroxidase (TPO), an enzyme essential for the production of thyroid hormones. In autoimmune thyroid diseases, the immune system mistakenly attacks thyroid tissue, leading to inflammation and impaired thyroid function. This test is commonly used to diagnose Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the most frequent cause of hypothyroidism, and is also helpful in evaluating Graves' disease, an autoimmune cause of hyperthyroidism. Anti-TPO antibodies may be detected even before symptoms or abnormal thyroid hormone levels develop, making the test valuable for early diagnosis and risk assessment.
