Overview
The ANA (Anti-Nuclear Antibody) Screening by EIA, Serum test detects Anti-Nuclear Antibodies (ANA) using the Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA) method. ANA are autoantibodies directed against components of the cell nucleus and are commonly found in individuals with autoimmune diseases. This screening test is widely used as the initial laboratory investigation for patients with symptoms suggestive of autoimmune disorders, including joint pain, persistent fatigue, skin rashes, unexplained fever, muscle weakness, dry eyes, and dry mouth. A positive ANA result may be associated with conditions such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Sjögren's syndrome, Systemic Sclerosis (Scleroderma), Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD), Polymyositis, and Dermatomyositis. However, ANA positivity may also occur in healthy individuals, especially with advancing age, and therefore should always be interpreted alongside clinical findings and additional laboratory tests. If the screening result is positive, further testing such as ANA by Indirect Immunofluorescence (IFA), ENA Profile, Anti-dsDNA, or disease-specific autoantibodies may be recommended.
